Member Outreach
Ideal For
A student who wants the most durable skill in politics — staying composed, on message, and accurate with someone who did not expect to hear from you.
The Member Outreach Intern conducts direct contact with members and supporters by phone, text, and survey. This is the role that builds the single most durable political skill available at the entry level: composure in cold contact, and the ability to hold a message under objection. Performance in this role is evaluated on **conversation quality and data accuracy, not raw dial volume.** Ranking callers by dial count produces rushed calls and corrupted records. Interns are trained on applicable contact rules — permitted calling hours, do-not-call obligations, and consent requirements for automated calls and text messaging — and must follow them without exception.
Core Duties
- Conduct outbound calls to members and supporters following approved scripts.
- Log every contact accurately in the database, including outcome, notes, and updated information.
- Handle objections and off-script conversations while maintaining message discipline.
- Escalate hostile, distressed, or sensitive calls per defined criteria rather than improvising.
- Conduct survey and feedback calls and record responses accurately.
- Support text and digital outreach programs within consent requirements.
- Update member contact information and preferences discovered during calls.
- Report recurring member questions, objections, and themes to staff.
Role-Specific Qualifications
- Clear speaking voice and comfort initiating conversations with strangers.
- Composure under rejection and hostility.
- Accuracy in real-time data entry while speaking.
- Willingness to follow scripts, calling rules, and escalation policy exactly.
Standard Qualifications — All Internships
- Current enrollment in an accredited college or university; eligible for the Federal Work Study Program where applicable.
- Senior in high school, recent high school graduate, or GED equivalent.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and general computer literacy.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Reliable, punctual, and professional demeanor.
- Discretion with confidential and pre-release information; adherence to all organizational policies, including confidentiality, data handling, and workplace safety standards.
- Prior office or customer service experience is a plus but not required.
Internship: minimum 16 hours per week, in person, Alexandria, VA. You are allowed to work up to 40 hours a week with limited overtime opportunities.
Every intern completes the program's five core competencies and attends the annual conference. Expect a written midpoint review, weekly one-on-one supervision, and a documented portfolio of completed work.
