Social Media Management

Ideal For

A student who already runs an account with a real audience and now wants the paid, measured, approved version of the same instinct — someone who wants to know not just whether a post landed, but what it cost and what it returned.

The Social Media Management Intern owns the organization's presence across owned and paid social channels end to end: writing and publishing organic content, building and monitoring paid campaigns, and reporting on what both produced. This is the most complete digital marketing role in the program — most internships give a student either the creative half or the analytical half, and this one gives both. It also carries unusual responsibility. What an intern publishes is public immediately and permanently, and paid campaigns spend real money under real rules. Three structural constraints apply and should be stated plainly in the posting: the intern **does not hold budget authority** and works against a capped test budget or in a build-and-recommend capacity subject to staff approval; **all platform access is through organizational accounts** with multi-factor authentication, never personal accounts; and the intern **is not and cannot be the authorized advertiser of record** for political or issue advertising, which requires verified organizational identity and disclaimers under platform policy. Because permitted messaging in paid political and issue advertising depends on the legal structure of the entity funding the buy, campaign content and disclaimers must be reviewed by the appropriate staff or counsel before launch.

Core Duties

  • Organic content

  • Draft, schedule, and publish daily content across the organization's platforms, following the approval process for each.
  • Adapt content to platform-specific format, length, and voice rather than cross-posting identically.
  • Monitor comments, mentions, and direct messages; respond within community guidelines and escalate anything sensitive.
  • Capture and publish real-time content during events, including live coverage.
  • Maintain the content calendar and coordinate with design for assets.
  • Paid campaigns

  • Build campaigns, ad sets, audiences, and creative variations in platform ad managers.
  • Traffic creative from the design team into platforms at correct specifications.
  • Monitor campaign delivery, pacing, and performance daily and flag anomalies.
  • Run and document structured creative and audience tests.
  • Verify that every campaign carries the required disclaimers and approvals before launch.
  • Measurement

  • Build and maintain recurring dashboards covering organic and paid performance.
  • Produce campaign reports with reach, engagement, cost, and conversion metrics.
  • Translate findings into written recommendations a non-technical reader can act on.
  • Maintain consistent campaign naming conventions and tracking parameters.
  • Verify all factual claims before publishing or launching; treat a post as unrecallable.

Role-Specific Qualifications

  • A link to accounts or content you have personally written and published, with audience or performance figures if available.
  • Working fluency in the current conventions of at least two major platforms.
  • Comfort with numbers, spreadsheets, and performance metrics; a spreadsheet screen is part of the interview.
  • Judgment under time pressure and a demonstrated understanding that posts are permanent and spend is real.
  • Prior exposure to Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads, or a comparable platform is a strong plus.
  • Availability during evenings and weekends around events.

Standard Qualifications — All Internships

  • Current enrollment in an accredited college or university; eligible for the Federal Work Study Program where applicable.
  • Senior in high school, recent high school graduate, or GED equivalent.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and general computer literacy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional demeanor.
  • Discretion with confidential and pre-release information; adherence to all organizational policies, including confidentiality, data handling, and workplace safety standards.
  • Prior office or customer service experience is a plus but not required.

Internship: minimum 16 hours per week, in person, Alexandria, VA. You are allowed to work up to 40 hours a week with limited overtime opportunities.

Every intern completes the program's five core competencies and attends the annual conference. Expect a written midpoint review, weekly one-on-one supervision, and a documented portfolio of completed work.
