Web & Automation

Ideal For

A technically capable student who wants to ship things that real people use — a live public website and internal tools other staff depend on — and who is comfortable being the only person in the room who understands how it works.

The Web & Automation Intern owns the organization's technical surface: the public website, the search performance behind it, and the internal automation that reduces repetitive staff work. This is the program's single technical role, which makes it unusually broad for an internship and unusually visible — the work is either live on a public property or being used daily by staff. The role exists only where a technical staff member is available to review the work. Unreviewed code and unreviewed automation create risk rather than efficiency, and this posting should not go up without that reviewer identified. Three rules govern the AI portion of the role and should appear in the posting: **no confidential, donor, member, or pre-release information may be entered into consumer AI tools**; **every factual claim in AI-generated output must be independently sourced before use**; and **AI produces first drafts, never final products.**

Core Duties

  • Web

  • Build and modify web pages, templates, and components, including campaign and event landing pages.
  • Build and test forms, including submission handling and data routing to the CRM.
  • Implement and validate tracking, tags, and analytics instrumentation.
  • Conduct keyword research and apply on-page optimization; write and revise metadata and alt text.
  • Monitor site performance, uptime, search indexing, and errors, and escalate incidents.
  • Test across browsers and devices and fix rendering and responsiveness issues.
  • Automation and tooling

  • Identify and document repetitive internal workflows that are candidates for automation.
  • Build automations and internal tooling using approved platforms, subject to staff review.
  • Develop, test, and document prompt systems and templates for recurring staff tasks.
  • Test automations and code against edge cases and failure conditions before deployment.
  • Maintain an inventory of active automations and integrations, their owners, and their dependencies.
  • Across both

  • Follow version control and deployment practice; never modify production directly.
  • Write plain-language documentation and train staff on the tools you build.
  • Maintain documentation of site architecture, integrations, and redirects sufficient for a successor to pick up.
  • Follow the organization's AI use policy and data handling rules without exception.

Role-Specific Qualifications

  • Working proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; repository or deployed sample work required.
  • Familiarity with a content management system and with version control.
  • Familiarity with automation platforms, scripting, or API integration.
  • Skepticism toward AI output and willingness to verify rather than trust.
  • Ability to explain technical work to non-technical colleagues.
  • Understanding that production changes affect a live public property.

Standard Qualifications — All Internships

  • Current enrollment in an accredited college or university; eligible for the Federal Work Study Program where applicable.
  • Senior in high school, recent high school graduate, or GED equivalent.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and general computer literacy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional demeanor.
  • Discretion with confidential and pre-release information; adherence to all organizational policies, including confidentiality, data handling, and workplace safety standards.
  • Prior office or customer service experience is a plus but not required.
